Story: A bouquet of three short stories — based on Saradindu Bandopadhyay’s Bhut Bhabishyat, Satyajit Ray’s Brown Saheber Bari and Anath Babur Bhoy — Sandip Ray’s latest presentation, Jekhane Bhooter Bhoy, is a motley package of spooky tales that come in various flavours — scary, haunting and funn
Review: Fast breathing… faster heartbeat… there’s nothing like ghost stories. No denying the fact, we do enjoy scarefest. After Anik Dutta’s superhit Bhooter Bhabishyat, we see Sandip Ray trying his hands at dealing with ghosts in Jekhane Bhooter Bhoy. Short and crisp — the filmmaker has tried his best to stick to the original plot and characters except for a little deviation in the settings. It is Tarini Khuro (a fictional character created by Satyajit Ray), the master story-teller, who serves the common link between the three narratives. With a bunch of young kids as his audience, Tarini Khuro narrates stories from his repertoire, picked up by him over the years through various personal and professional interactions with people.
The first story in the film, Anath Babur Bhoy, is about this eccentric gentleman who claims to be an expert on ghosts. As a ghost hunter, he has explored across India and has done extensive research on life after death, spirits, vampires, black magic, voodoo et al. He tells the young writer, who he meets on his way to Raghunathpur, about the purpose of his latest trip. Anath Babu shares his eagerness to spend the next night at the infamous Halder Bari. Dwijen Bandopadhyay as Anath Babu is impressive. The broken mansion as the backdrop appears haunted indeed. However, the interior setup, props and the surround sound fail to evoke the desired chill factor expected of in such a situation.
Considering the length of the other two stories, which are a bit longer, Tarini Khuro decides to take a break right after the first story — a good idea on the director’s part.
In Brown Saheber Bari, the director struggles to capture the right ambience in Kalimpong (originally set in Bangalore). It is a mystery surrounding a character called Simon, whom Brown Saheb had repeatedly mentioned in his diary till he breathed his last, many years ago. The diary is now in possession of a bank employee and a voracious reader, Ranjan Sengupta. Ranjan (Abir Chatterjee) gets so fascinated by Brown and Simon’s exceptional bonding that he resolves to dig out more with the help of his childhood friend, Aneek, now a travel agent, and his close associate, Mr Banerjee, played by Bhaswar Chatterjee and Biswajit Chakraborty respectively. Since the story adapted here is quite popular among readers, Ray should have taken special care to make it stand out. Given the cast, there is no way performances can go wrong. But, alas, poor special effect leaves a bitter aftertaste.
A fright-filled comedy generating uninhibited laughter, Bhut Bhabishyat comes as a breath of fresh air. In a bid to write a romantic novel, Pratap (Saswata Chatterjee) starts living in a small rented place in Raipur. On the fourth day of his stay, he is woken up from his sleep by a friendly ghost (once again played by Paran Bandopadhyay) who wishes to talk to him. After the initial jolt, Pratap befriends the ghost. Following which, the ghost requests him to do a personal favour. In return, Pratap will be given a handsome amount. The conversations between Pratap and the ghost are uproarious. Saswata and Paran complement each other. And when it comes to comic timing,
both the actors are simply brilliant. The way Ray handles a particular dream sequence — with tinted colour code and the camera rendering a glazed effect — is good. The scene in the train also has a retro feel to it.
Overall, Jekhane Bhooter Bhoy is entertaining, but suffers due to insipid production quality.
