It was an iconic film that bridged geo-cultural barriers and changed the way Bengalis looked at themselves in cinema. Now, seven years after The Bong Connection, the makers are planning a sequel of sorts, with the director's mantle passing from Anjan Dutt to Mainak Bhaumik. What's more, Riya Sen is supposed to star in the film.

The working title is Bong-oh-Bong: The Bong Connection II and it should go on the floors in December 2013. Producer Joy Ganguly, who was also behind the 2006 hit, said: "The Bong Connection centres around two guys — one who has come to Kolkata from USA (Sayan Munshi) and the other whose journey is in the reverse direction (Parambrata Chatterjee). Bong-oh-Bong is not a continuation of the original story, though the flavour will be similar. This time, it's about two girls — one who is American but married to a Bengali there, while the other is a Kolkata girl, who has an arranged marriage with an NRI to pursue her dreams of higher studies abroad."

The two tracks run parallel. "The film also shows how Bengalis are becoming more ambitious with each passing day. The Bengali girl from Kolkata opted for an NRI guy so that she could fulfil her dreams. Many girls would be able to identify with her character. After marriage, the American girl has trouble balancing work and personal life and has a nervous breakdown. She then comes to India to discover spirituality. So, the film is about the dreams and struggles of global Bengalis," added Joy, who's produced back-to-back hits in Shukno Lanka, Bhooter Bhobishyot and Maach Mishti n More and touts this as his most ambitious project yet. Bong-oh-Bong, for which he developed the concept and the story, will be the first in a series of five films he plans produce in the next 12-18 months.

Mainak didn't want to talk much about the film. "It's still too early. Yes, I'll be directing the film, though it is not a sequel but has a thematic connect with The Bong Connection. Before that, I have two projects lined up — Dwicharini and Family Album," he said. While Raima Sen was in the first film, little sis Riya should be part of the second.

"We will rope in an American actress and Riya to play the lead roles. But nothing is final now. Plus, there are over 50 characters in the film. The male leads haven't been locked yet," said Joy.

Why not Anjan Dutt again, since he'd delivered a success with The Bong Connection? "Well, seven years have passed since then. Two-three years back I did approach Anjanda for Part II, but he didn't show any interest. So I decided to start afresh and felt Mainak would be a better director for this film. Mainak has stayed in the US for years and seen the global Bengalis from very close quarters," said Joy. Shooting begins in December-January in India and moves to the US in February-March 2014. While 70% of the film will be shot in the US East Coast, the rest will be filmed in and around Kolkata. The team is primarily targeting the Bengali audience, with an eye on the indie-global world cinema market. Way to go, Bongs!
